Birth: 1997 Bloom: 2002 Death: 2007
Electroclash music has musical traditions of the 1980s with the usage of synths, analogue drum machines. The style is characterized by a retro sound and musical minimalism in a combination with visual effects of the 1970s-1980s and vintage aesthetics of disco and punk. The style hasn`t got a certain original sound. Electroclash has very wide range of music from retro in Abba`s style (Ladytron) to minimal techno (Legowelt). The visual aesthetic of electroclash has been associated with the 1982 cult film «Liquid Sky». The band Suicide is said to be one of the founders of the style.
Electroclash became popular in the late 90s in New York City and Detroit. The Lux club in Williamsburg is considered as an official birthplace of the style, where Larry Tee, who coined the term «electroclash», used to throw parties.
In the 2000s, DJ Hell and his label International Gigolo Records foreshadowed the style proper. He enriched electroclash`s scene with stars such as Miss Kittin, Tiga, The Hacker, and Hard Ton.
