Neo-Soul

Neo soul is a term coined by a music industry entrepreneur Kedar Massenburg during the late 1990s to market and describe a style of music that emerged from soul and contemporary R&B. The sound returns to the vintage sound of classic soul of the 1960s and 1970s (D`Angelo, Lauryn Hill, Erykah-Badu).

Birth: 1994 Bloom: 1996

The Fugees is believed to be founders of this style with their song «Killing Me Softly With His Song» (1996). Neo soul absorbed elements of classic soul, alternative hip-hop (Lauryn Hill), jazz, and even classical music (Alicia Keys).

Some years ago neo soul was an underground style, as opposed to commercially successful rhythm and blues. But by the late 00s young independent artists`ve come to follow traditional soul and mix it with electronics.

Some artists, who revived neo-soul, today are big stars such as Frank Ocean and Mayer Hawthorne. Some artists like to experiment with soul forms combining traditional sound with IDM, glitch, and electro. Among them attention should be paid to Jamie Lidell, Michael Fakesch, and How to Dress Well.
