Lowercase
Lowercase is an experimental form of music originally coined by composer Steve Roden. Lowercase is an extreme form of ambient minimalism where very quiet, usually unheard, sounds are punctuated with silence.
Birth: 1981 Bloom: 2000
Roden popularized the movement with the album entitled «Forms of Paper», in which he made recordings of himself handling paper in various ways. These recordings were commissioned by the Hollywood branch of the Los Angeles Public Library. Roden`s ideas later were developed by many distinguished musicians, including the pioneer of electronic music and teacher Kim Cascone, compositors Tetsu Inoue, Richard Chartie, and Bernhard Günter.
Nowadays, there are some labels which specialize in lowercase music: Bremsstrahlung Recording, Trente Oiseaux, 12k, and Raster-Noton.
